We Need a Great Marketing Manager

Posted April 18, 2012 8:49 AM by Dylan Miyake

Ascendant Strategy Management Group is looking for a marketing manager in the Washington, DC area to support our rapidly growing social enterprise. As a marketing manager with Ascendant, you'll help us expand our presence by overseeing a wide portfolio of branding and marketing activities, including public relations, e-marketing, social media, collateral design and content writing, plus large conferences too.

Basically, we are getting crushed with a lot of great new work and are looking for someone who can ensure that our outreach activities do not fall through the cracks and that we can generate new interest and fuel more growth. This will be a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor with a great bunch of folks, learn, and help us to grow this company into a name brand in the social enterprise space. We are looking for someone to meet all of the following criteria:

  • An incredibly hard worker, even when it's not so fun. There is a ton of work to do, and a lot of it is not the most glamorous. After all -- we are a small organization with huge ambitions and no support staff. We are looking for someone to help execute on all fronts without complaint or supervision, and come back asking for more.
  • A cool person to be with. Not a crazy party animal, just someone we can trust, rely upon, hang out with, bounce ideas off of, and generally interact with in a positive way, both personally and professionally. This is one of the most stringent requirements we have. Recently, these have been in Harpswell, ME, Point Clear, AL, and Las Vegas, NV. Feel free to recommend a good location for our next offsite, we are an adventurous bunch.
  • A master of multitasking and exceeding expectations. We're going to throw a ton of work at you of every possible sort, and you need that magic skill of being able to figure it out even if you have no idea where to start. Since we're a small company, we can't promise that everything you do will be marketing-related. We may need help with software testing. Or maybe even client delivery. Or maybe something else we haven't thought of yet. In short, we need someone who's up for anything.
  • A really, really fast learner who thrives in a crazy unstructured environment. We don't have time to teach things twice. This is not a 9-5 office job. In fact, right now, there is no "office." You'll be connected via Outlook, Skype, Mobile, etc., etc., etc. You may need to be on the road up to 10% of the time. You'll be judged on how fast and how well you get things done, not how much time you spend on it. And we're not easy judges.
  • An eye for design and an ear for a good story. You are not expected to generate all the branding and marketing materials from scratch, but instead, be able to turn our outlines and storyboards into professional looking collaterals. Everyone on the team will have an opinion – it will be your job to listen, understand, and make things great. Creative Suite (Specifically InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) fluency is a big plus.

Specific areas where we are looking for help:

  • Planning and marketing for our Annual Summit (100+ attendees)
  • Planning and supporting other conferences, expos, and speaking events
  • Collateral development (flyers, brochures, articles, client case studies)
  • Development of an integrated style guide for Ascendant
  • Content management for our website, and eventually our consulting artifacts
  • Management of the overall direction for our websites
  • Blogging, website content, SEO, and Google Analytics)
  • Monthly email campaigns and periodic press releases
  • Targeted outreach to specific sectors (Education, Government, Nonprofit, Associations)
  • Managing our CRM (SalesForce)
  • Other branding and marketing opportunities as needed

What we offer:

  • The chance to get in on the "ground floor" of a new organization with a really cool vision
  • The ability to work with thought leaders at Harvard Business School and elsewhere
  • A focus on mission-driven social and public sector industries
  • The chance to work with interesting partners from around the world
  • The ability to make a difference at Ascendant from day one
  • Great colleagues and clients
  • A challenge like no other
  • Competitive salary and benefits, commensurate with your experience

To qualify for this position, you'll need to have a BA or BS from a leading undergraduate institution, a few years of experience in this space, live in Washington, DC (or be ready to move there on your own dime), be able to go through an extensive interview process where we'll ask hard questions about branding, marketing, our company (we like to hear people say nice things about us) and the Balanced Scorecard (it's what we do). Be ready to be challenged. You may be asked to get a Department of Defense security clearance, so let us know if that would be an issue.

Send us a cover letter describing how you can excel in this environment and help our company grow. Since this is a marketing position, market yourself well: please include your resume, a writing sample that you think is representative, and if you have it, a portfolio of design work that you've done (this isn't a requirement, but a big plus). Please also indicate if you have any experience coding in JavaScript, HTML, ColdFusion, etc.

We may not respond to everyone, but we will look at every application. As busy as we are, we think finding the right person is critical to our success. If we think there could be a match, get ready for a set of phone interviews and then we'll find a way to meet you in person. We needed someone yesterday, so, if you are great, expect this process to move quickly. Submit cover letters and resumes to our posting on LinkedIn: ASMG Marketing Manager
