Posted June 28, 2009 8:10 AM by Ted Jackson

On June 18, the New York Times in coordination with the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York and Philanthropy New York (the old Regional Association of Grantmakers). Like last year, this event was held in the wonderful NY Times center, and the presentations were excellent.

Jack Rosenthal interviewed the founders, executive directors, and board members of the 6 finalist organizations, and then awards were given out to all. The finalist were:

  • Citizen's Advice Bureau
  • Groundwork, Inc.
  • Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT)
  • Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project (NEDAP)
  • New York Cares
  • Vera Institute of Justice

Each of the finalist had submitted information that demonstrated their capabilities and performance across seven management areas. 1. Overall Management Focus on Results. 2. Governance Structure That Moves the Organization Forward. 3. Strong, Transparent and Accountable Financial Management. 4. Inclusive, Diverse and Responsive Organizational Practices. 5. Enlightened Use of Human Resources and Technology. 6. Regular and Effective Communications. 7. Effective, Ethical Fundraising and Resource Development.

The interviews and presentations were great. Many of the organizations are incorporating aspects of performance management, which is great. I think there were twice as many as last year. The winner this year was New York Cares.
